| The
second Len Pick Memorial Lecture
took place at the Corn Exchange
Bourne on the 29th January 2008. The
event was a complete sell-out a
week before the event and the capacity
audience of 250 was firstly entertained
by Judy Theobald of BBC Radio Lincolnshire
who gave a humorous talk on some
of her experiences resulting from
her work throughout the county.
Judy is a well-known raconteur
and presenter and the audience
warmed to her many humorous anecdotes
typifying her job. |

Following
an interval for refreshments
(extended to iron out a sudden
hiccup in the projection system!)
Simon Weston took the floor
and enthralled everybody with
the story of his life from
childhood to present day. The
audience listened spell bound
to his speech which was graphically
illustrated by scenes from
the bombing of RFA Sir Galahad,
through the dark days of the
treatment that he received
for his wounds and moving on
to pictures of his wedding
day and his three children.
But there was more. His realisation
for the need for himself to
pick the pieces up and sort
his life out and the demonstration
of his sheer will for survival.
He remarked in conclusion that
he considered himself the luckiest
man alive. Nobody in the audience
could have been unmoved at
that sentiment. One comment
we received after the event
was “At the end of the
evening we came away inspired
by his courage and determination,
but also feeling emotionally
exhausted by hearing of his
experiences”.

In
thanking both speakers Chairman
of the Trustees, Geoff Hyde,
thanked them for their contribution
to the event. To recognise
the theme of the evening, Geoff
then presented a cheque for £1,000
to the Bourne Branch of the
British Legion for use in connection
with their welfare fund to
benefit and assist local ex-servicemen
in need.

| |
| The
Trustees were pleased that the
evening was such an obvious success
(despite those projection hiccups!)
and are most grateful to all
those organisations who gave
their time and energy in whatever
capacity, to making the evening
a real remembrance of both the
benefaction of our founder and
also those who are currently
serving in places far removed
from their home town. |
| |
Geoff
Hyde commented after the evening, “We
are very grateful to both Simon
and Judy for coming tonight.
They were highly professional
and added in their own individual
ways to make this evening so
exceptionally special. They
both set an extremely high
standard and their respective
performances were fully appreciated
by the audience. This event
is now firmly established and
the only problem we face now
is finding further speakers
for next year of such high
quality!” |
| |
It
is obvious that in promoting
this annual event, the Trustees
have struck a rich chord which
was demonstrated by this year’s
waiting list for tickets. Adrian
Smith, Trust Manager also speaking
after the event said, “We
are sure that Mr Pick would
have approved of this evening,
without his benefaction it
is unlikely that our stakeholders
would have had the opportunity
of hearing in our town such
an uplifting and incredible
story of true grit and determination
to overcome such tremendous
odds. Simon was truly inspirational”. |
